Church news

From the May 1994 issue of The Christian Science Journal

One hundred years ago this year, a small band of Christian Scientists, under the leadership of Mary Baker Eddy, undertook the construction of the Original Edifice of The Mother Church. From time to time this year, we'll recall the spiritual import behind significant events that took place during the construction.

On May 21, 1894, the cornerstone of the Original Edifice of The Mother Church was laid. In a sermon dedicating the structure the following January, Mrs. Eddy said, "Christian Scientists, you have planted your standard on the rock of Christ, the true, the spiritual idea,—the chief corner-stone in the house of our God" (Pulpit and Press, p. 10). This statement certainly has relevance in our age.

Like those early Christian Scientists, we too are striving to live our lives based on the "corner-stone" of Christ—in the midst of what often appears to be a very disturbed world. In some areas at least, crime is rampant, wars rage, and joblessness and homelessness are all too present. But we don't have to despair. We have this cornerstone—the Christ—to lean on and provide a spiritual center for us.
