Unhappy memories are for healing

From the June 1996 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Sometimes we live life at such a fast speed that there appears to be no time to stop and contemplate what is going on. We become like outsiders watching life go past, as in a fast-paced movie. But later, certain of life's scenes come back to thought—and they are troubling enough that we must deal with them.

We may have at one time felt trapped in a certain situation that seemed out of our control, for instance. Years later we are reminded of that incident when we least expect it. It often happens at a quiet, reflective moment. There is always a blessing in this. Now, in the present, an opportunity has been given to us to examine the past incident. If we do so in the light of a knowledge and understanding of God, we are bound to see that right there and then we were still under God's care, that God was taking care of us. However bitter or painful the experience was, we can somewhere see, even if at first only a small glimpse, that God's spiritual law was in operation in our lives, even then. And we realize we can heal unhappy memories in the light of present spiritual intuition and insight.

We actually live permanently under the law of God, in the love of our Father-Mother, Love. God's love and protection of us are uninterrupted. To appreciate this spiritual reality and to see more of God's law in operation, we have to go beyond any picture of loss, crime, even war and abuse.
