When our son was about two years old he came and told me that his eyebrows hurt. I prayed for him right away. He responded quickly to this prayer and was again happy and free. Over a period of time, though, this began to be a pattern, increasing in severity. I recognized these as headaches. They seemed debilitating at times. At each occurrence, we turned immediately to God for healing and received it each time. But the headaches kept coming back. One time, however, my son asked me in great distress why he had to keep having this healing over and over. With my whole heart I turned to God for an answer that we could both understand.
I explained to him that God doesn't know of sickness of any kind. From God's point of view, he had never had the first headache because God never made it. God sends only love, and therefore the divine embrace is the only reality; it's all there is to feel. Since a friend of our family is a stage magician, I used this image to help us understand the point that discord or sickness is not the truth about us, but an illusion—never real in the first place. Our friend has shown us some of the tricks he performs (he calls them illusions), and he has also shown us how he actually does them. We have all been amazed that after we know how the trick, or illusion, is accomplished, we are not fooled when we see it performed again.
We could see that a headache, no matter how many times it had happened, was not real, was not from God, and was not part of His creation—just as the illusions performed by our friend over and over again were still only illusions.
