The following report was made available as a handout to people who attended this year 's Annual Meeting of The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts, U.S.A, held on Monday, June 3 This report supplements the Annual Meeting report that appeared in last month's issue of The Christian Science Journal.
The work of the Committees on Publication is deeply rooted in Mary Baker Eddy's mission for her Church: "... to commemorate the word and works of our Master, which should reinstate primitive Christianity and its lost element of healing." Manual of The Mother Church, p. 17. Her inspired foresight established a permanent activity that should "correct in a Christian manner impositions on the public in regard to Christian Science, injustices done Mrs. Eddy or members of this Church by the daily press, by periodicals or circulated literature of any sort." Ibid., Art. XXXIII, Sect. 2.
The structure of this activity, as described in the Committee's Vision Statement, is similar to that of a tree. The tree trunk supports the branches of a tree. The Committee Office in Boston supports and coordinates the corrective work in the Field. In a similar manner, Committees in states, provinces, and other jurisdictions reach out in their own areas like spreading boughs, extending support to Assistant Committees and individual church members. And like the leaves of the tree, church members turn to God for inspiration in accomplishing our healing mission. At the root of our entire activity is the Church Manual, which underlies our work.
