"Crack, crack, crack"—day and night for two weeks the ceramic tiles of my apartment's floor were coming unglued. Only the year before, the same problem had forced me to have part of the floor redone. And three other families in the same building had had or were having the same experience. A friend, unaware of my problem, told me of a current scandal in the country due to the discovery that many buildings had been constructed without regard for certain human beliefs about axes in line with certain planets.
Feeling a bit overwhelmed, I telephoned a Christian Science practitioner for prayerful treatment. At once her few calming words showed me this was an opportunity to deepen my understanding of the spiritual structure of the universe and of the immovable foundation of God, Love. The Bible declares, "Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his" (II Tim. 2:19). I also pondered the spiritual definition of Church in Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, especially the first part, which says, "The structure of Truth and Love; whatever rests upon and proceeds from divine Principle" (p. 583).
As I pondered these truths over the next few weeks, I perceived more clearly than ever before that everything is within the structure, or consciousness, of Truth and Love, even those elements which seem to the five senses to be external phenomena over which one has no control. Indeed, it was logical to accept that the source and maintainer of the real, spiritual foundation and superstructure of everything is God, Mind, Principle, Himself. I cherished this secure structure. And as I dwelt, in thought, in this truth, I began to forget about the "crack, crack." I just didn't hear or fear it anymore. I don't know when it stopped, but it did, and none of us in my building have had any further trouble with tiles coming loose.
