Yielding to God's plan

From the May 1997 issue of The Christian Science Journal

There's a tendency to want to plan for the future. We want to maximize our achievements and our joy by avoiding mistakes and wasted time. Certainly there's nothing wrong with prudence and being prepared. But when our plans include dogmatic organizing and a zealous attachment to a particular result, we cross the border of wise preparedness into human will. We attempt to place an outline, or border, around God's plan.

Christ Jesus taught us in his Sermon on the Mount, "Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on."Matt. 6:25 Literally "take no thought"? We might think: "Well, that's fine for the simpler society in which the Master lived, but today's complex financial and social circumstances require constant planning and foresight. I'd be unwise not to take the proper steps to ensure well-being and safety."

The trouble is, we cannot possibly take into account every human variable in evaluating a certain course of action. What can we do? We can turn to and acknowledge the perfect government and care of divine Mind, God. Divine Mind created the universe, and this universe is spiritual, unflawed, expressing the divine nature. It is complete in every detail and is entirely good. This is the truth of creation, despite appearances to the contrary. Mind's government is always in action, never failing; and man, as Mind's immortal reflection, is governed by divine law. Part of the metaphysical interpretation of the term Mind in Science and Health is "... Deity, which outlines but is not outlined."Science and Health, p. 591
