Wednesday evening readings: timely and community-specific

From the February 1998 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The readings from the Bible and Science and Health presented each Wednesday at the testimony meetings in branch Churches of Christ, Scientist, are the result of much prayer and effort on the part of the First Reader. And it is a joy to listen to inspiring, healing responses expressed by the congregation. Readings addressing current events and community concerns can be especially helpful. This is the story of how the readings for one Wednesday evening service developed.

We had company for Christmas. The weather was beautiful. Our daughter had to leave early to go back to work, but her husband and their son and two of their friends stayed on to see the Rose Parade on New Year's Day. They left the Wednesday morning after New Year's Day. A strong storm front came through our area just after everyone had left. When our daughter called to see if her family's noon flight had been delayed, I prayed diligently for the safety of all involved. One of the hymns that companioned me is No. 148 in the Christian Science Hymnal. I mentally adjusted the verse to read:

In heavenly Love abiding,
No change [our hearts] shall fear;
And safe is such confiding,
For nothing changes here.
The storm may roar without [us],
[Our hearts won't] low be laid;
[For] God is round about [us],
[We cannot] be dismayed [.]
