Interest in spirituality on the rise: searching the bookshelves

From the April 1998 issue of The Christian Science Journal

"The time for thinkers has come." Science and Health, p. vii In this short, arresting statement, author Mary Baker Eddy identifies, for all generations, a primary characteristic of those seekers willing to set aside preconceived notions in order to find a more universal truth. They are thinkers.

As readers of this magazine know, the last decade of the twentieth century is an era of unprecedented soul-searching—both individual and collective. There is a newfound acceptance of public discourse on spiritual topics. The popularity of the television show Touched by an Angel and of Oprah Winfrey's salute to good Samaritans, which she calls her 'Angel Network," bears witness to this new openness.
