What are we doing for heaven's (harmony's) sake?

From the April 1998 issue of The Christian Science Journal

While driving through a city several years ago, I was impressed with a question posed on a billboard: "What on earth are you doing for heaven's sake?" This led me to contemplate, what was I doing "for heaven's sake"?

The Christian Science textbook, Science and Health by Mary Baker Eddy, gives the metaphysical interpretation of heaven as "harmony; the reign of Spirit; government by divine Principle; spirituality; bliss; the atmosphere of Soul."  Science and Health, p. 587 Man made in the image and likeness of his creator cannot be anything but harmonious; this is his spiritual nature as the reflection of the one and only all-harmonious God. In proportion as we recognize our true being as presently residing in "the atmosphere of Soul," we directly feel the influence of God's reign of harmony on any discordant condition; it effects an immediate change for the better.

Believing that heaven is a physical
locality can make heavenly harmony
belong only to a far-off paradise.
