From a dancer: loosening the grasp of fear

From the August 1998 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The dancer graces the stage with a presence of ethereal weightlessness, poise, beauty, strength, and confidence. Through years of sacrifice and toil, a dancer perfects the craft. Only with love, faith, and humility does he or she actually fulfill the ideal of dance!

What obstacles that might seem insurmountable have to be overcome to reach this ideal? The most prevalent is fear! Whether in dance, on the job, or in a relationship, most of us can agree that fear can prevent one from expressing his or her ability to the fullest.

As a dancer, I feared practically everything! Once, in a modern dance class my teacher pulled me aside to say, essentially, "If I could put you on roller skates to get you to move, I would!" It wasn't until years later that I actually felt the grasp of fear loosening enough so that I moved with confidence and grace.
