How do you combat torture?

From the August 1998 issue of The Christian Science Journal

How does Christian Science view the torture, in some countries, of religious leaders and those engaged in protecting human rights? What can one do to combat such tyranny?

—from an inquirer to the home page of the Church of Christ, Scientist

Christian Science never justifies evil. But it does seek to help people deal with it as the Bible reveals we can. Christ Jesus' immediate follower Peter, and later, Paul and Silas, were unjustly imprisoned (see Acts, chapters 12 and 16), and they were liberated by the power of God. When Peter was put in jail, the Bible indicates, prayer was the unceasing response of the church to this imprisonment.
