Overdue thanks to God

From the August 1999 issue of The Christian Science Journal

It is with a heart filled with gratitude that I express long overdue thanks to God for the many blessings that that have come into my life as a result of Christian Science. I was introduced to its teachings by my mother, who in 1922 enrolled me in the Christian Science Sunday School. After Sunday School, I joined The Mother Church and, at college, a Christian Science organization. The truths I learned from the Bible and Science and Health have blessed my life with guidance, protection, and healing ever since.

I passed the strict
eyesight test for
admission to the
U.S. Navy's Officer
Candidate School.

In my undergraduate days at the university, I became afflicted with such painful and poor vision that I could scarcely read. After initially failing to heal the problem on a spiritual basis, and somewhat in desperation, I visited an optometrist. He fitted me with glasses, told me to to use them at all times, and said that I could expect to wear them for the rest of my life. This pronouncement shocked me into removing the glasses immediately after leaving his office, and I've never looked back. As I prayed more earnestly than ever to replace mortal vision with spiritual understanding, the problem gradually lessened until it disappeared. Later, upon the advent of World War II, I passed the strict eyesight test for admission to the United States Navy's Officer Candidate School.
