In a world beset with challenges, it is heartening to have the Biblical assurance "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble." Ps. 46:1 Christian Science is in exact accord with this premise, and offers systematic guidance in how to prove that God is indeed adequate to resolve any difficulty.
Quoting the Psalmist, Mary Baker Eddy writes, "Step by step will those who trust Him find that 'God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.'" Science and Health, p. 444. Trust is a vital word in that illuminating statement. It is through putting trust in God that one finds His help to be available and all-powerful. Trusting Him is consonant with a change of mind from belief in what the physical senses present as reality—mortal imperfection—to the conscious awareness of our eternal well-being and doing under God's government. Christian Science practice brings about such an enlightened shift of thought with its healing effect.
The quotation above is from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, and it's in a chapter titled "Teaching Christian Science." In this chapter the author makes the point that eventually we all must rise above materiality. A recognition of this demand impels and enables us step by step to trust in God, who is Spirit. This trust in turn demonstrates the Science of Christianity and its power and action. Trust in God opens the door to a safe refuge, always available and always at hand.
