"What Can I Tell You about this book that would make you want to read it?" I asked my neighbors as I handed them a copy of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures. My friend surprised me with her emotional response: "I know what you can tell me—you can tell me if all the things we have to go through in this life are worth it! I mean, is there something that makes all the suffering and pain and trouble worthwhile?" I was so struck by the yearning in her voice that I could barely nod a "yes" to her. I had known that she and her husband were having the kind of difficulties young families often struggle with, but I hadn't realized how deeply she desired answers and a feeling of peace.
Her husband then said to me, "What can you tell me about the book that would make me want to read it? You could tell me what it means to you. That's what you can tell me."
I recovered my composure enough to share two instances in my life when the ideas in Science and Health brought healing to my daughter and husband, and a deep feeling of peace to me. When I finished speaking, my neighbor said, "Do you realize that what you've just told me has made me want to read that book?"
