I SMILED WHEN THIS SAYING APPEARED several years ago on a line of recreational clothing. It's an upbeat, positive declaration. And while having the freedom to engage in recreation is a joy for anyone, thinking about the deeper dimension of the statement brought me a brighter view of the essential goodness of real, spiritual life.
The vital fact is that we are spiritual beings. Our inward eye is refocused and enhanced as we engage in spiritual contemplation. Our outlook brightens. We see that the reason we exist is that God exists. We are because God is. What we do, earn, possess, or look like—our color, gender, companionship, and age—none of these characteristics truly identifies us.
I was buffeted by reversals, betrayal, and a profound grief.
