Facing down terrorism—one woman's experience

now lives in Illinois in the United States. But in 1974 she was working as a civilian teacher at American military bases in Germany. During this period, the Baader-Meinhof gang, also known as the Red Army Faction, was committing terrorist acts that affected German locations, such as banks and stores, and US military facilities. Sandy spent four years in Germany teaching and later doing drug-alcohol counseling for the US Army. The Journal asked her to share her experiences.

How did terrorist activity affect you as an American civilian?

Certain Places and activities were off-limits, because our military supervisors wanted us to be safe and because those places might be ones where terrorists or their sympathizers would gather.
