TIMELINE OF GLOBAL PROGRESS IN DEFEATING TERRORISM

From the December 2001 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Terrorism in the 20th Century

As US President George W. Bush and others have made clear, catching terrorists isn't easy. But history has shown that when citizens make a commitment to rejecting such violence, the tide will turn, however slowly. Mary Baker Eddy wrote, "The vox populi, through the providence of God, promotes and impels all true reform; and at the best time, will redress wrongs and rectify injustice" (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 80).

While many terrorist organizations are still active, the timeline below provides examples of those who have been defeated or rejected. The dates given are approximate.

1931 First recorded hijacking of an airplane. Peruvian aircraft boarded by revolutionaries, Pilot Byron D. Rickards, an American, persuades them to surrender.
