Prayer for the world—a call to love as Jesus did

"Why didn't we feel this way before?"

From the April 2002 issue of The Christian Science Journal

When human disaster brings us to our knees in prayer, God answers this prayer by resurrecting more love in our hearts.

After the horrible events of September 11, which undoubtedly caused many people to pray as they never had before, there seemed to be a heightened degree of tenderness and care for family, friends—even total strangers. Values and freedoms we may have come to take for granted now seem uppermost in thought. People yearn to make their heightened sense of value and freedom available to humanity at large.

Touched by this higher love, some ask, "Why didn't we feel this way before? Why did these terrible things have to happen before we felt this appreciation for and commitment to what makes life really worth living?"
