FAITH COMMUNITIES

The Methodist Church

From the June 2002 issue of The Christian Science Journal

This is the third segment in our series on Faith Communities. The previous segments ran in the February and May issues of the Journal.

"I Felt My Heart Strangely Warmed. I felt I did trust in Christ, Christ alone for salvation: And an assurance was given me, that he had taken away my sins, even mine, and saved me from the law of sin and death." John Wesley, "Journal," Wesley's Works, May 24, 1738.

When John Wesley wrote these words in his journal after a meeting on May 24, 1738, he and his brother Charles had already faced bigotry from their fellow Christians and had experienced failure as missionaries during their first and only trip to the American colonies. Sons of a clergyman, the brothers were members of the Church of England who had a deep love of the Bible and a willingness to preach "any time, any where."
