Mentality is inherently non-material.
Not seeing something for what it is can be dangerous. And not just for pedestrians. An assumption that something is true when it isn't can be just as much an obstacle on the path. And with the larger issues of life, like life and death, and identity and health, acting on false assumptions can get serious indeed.
