Exploring the place of women in the 19th century

An overflow crowd gathered to hear an outstanding panel of scholars speak about the 19th-century world of Mary Baker Eddy. James Albins, manager of program development for The Mary Baker Eddy Library for the Betterment of Humanity moderated the panel, including the segment with Ann Braude, which we are publishing here. Dr. Braude is the director of the Women's Studies in Religion Program and senior lecturer in American Religious History at Harvard Divinity School in cambridge, Massachusetts.

Other panelists included: David Hufford, who has been with Pennsylvania State University's Medical School for nearly 30 years. A Fellow at Penn State's Institute on Aging, he is a professor of humanities with joint appointments in family medicine and behavioral science. Phyllis Tickle, the contributing editor in religion to Publishers Weekly, the international trade journal of the book industry. She has been in publishing for over 30 years. Allen Weinstein, a well-known author and historian, who has taught at Smith College, Georgetown University, and Boston University. For the past 17 years, he has also been president of the Center for Democracy in Washington, D.C., which he helped found in 1985. Lesley Pitts, manager of the archives at the Mary Baker Eddy Library, who spoke on some of the items in the collection.
