AN EXCERPT

A spiritual leader's autobiography

From the March 2003 issue of The Christian Science Journal

One of the most popular book genres on the market these days is the spiritual autobiography. Seekers who have found their paths are eager to tell about their journeys and those who are "on the road" are equally glad to have these spiritual roadmaps.

Mary Baker Eddy, who discovered Christian Science, is the author of two autobiographies that tell of her own spiritual journey, and last fall they were combined in a single volume entitled, Mary Baker Eddy: Speaking for Herself.

A companion to these works in the book is an insightful introduction by who holds a Ph.D. in American religious history from Columbia University among others. This excerpt from Riess's introduction tells about the nature of spiritual autobiography and how it relates specifically to Mrs. Eddy's life.
