The phone rang one weekday afternoon, and after I answered I recognized the voice of a high-school-aged friend on the other end. "Mrs. Mack" he said, "I'm in between classes, and I'm wondering if you could give me a quick interview."
"Sure," I said, "what are we going to talk about?" I was expecting to give a simple opinion on politics or parenting or similar topic. "We're supposed to pick one of life's great questions and write a paper on it after interviewing people for their ideas. I've picked the question, Do you believe in fate?"
"Thanks for picking an easy topic and giving me plenty of time to think about it, Tyler," I said. We both laughed. But actually, as I explained to Tyler, this is a topic that I have been giving quite a bit of thought to lately.
