The power of pure thought

From the May 2003 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In the weeks and months after September 11, I traveled around the United States holding meetings about how to deal, from a spiritual perspective, with violence, hate, hurt, and destruction. As I talked with people, I found a growing feeling among many that their thinking has a fundamental effect on the world in which they live. Many individuals seem to be coming to the conclusion that when there is trouble in the world, what is needed more than anything is a change of thought.

One example of how people's collective thought has effected change in the United States, was the progress made during the civil rights movement in the 1960s. And examples elsewhere in the world include the collapse of the Berlin Wall in Germany in 1989 and of apartheid in South Africa in 1994.

In the face of serious troubles confronting the world today, it's natural to wonder just what kind of thinking has the power to bring about peace. Could purity of thought be one way to bring about change?
