Mugging defused

From the June 2007 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Shortly after my first wife and I got married, we lived in a somewhat rough neighborhood of Brooklyn. One night, while walking home from a movie at a local college campus, we witnessed a mugging in process. About 10 to 15 feet away, a young man, probably a student, was being physically assaulted by two young men on the sidewalk. My wife, ever fearless, called out, "Hey, let him go!"

Of course, this got the attention of the young men, and they stopped. Unfortunately, it also gave then a new focus—us. I encouraged my wife to pick up her pace and go ahead, while I lagged behind hoping to create a buffer between them and her. This worked, but as soon as one of the guys caught up, he jumped in front of me and punched me square in the jaw. Now he had my attention!

The guy then grabbed my left forearm, raising my hand between us, and asked, "What's that?" indicating my wedding band. As I answered, my consciousness flooded with the symbolism behind the band, a continuous ring representing eternal love. The band was a tangible reminder to me that no one can ever be separated from divine Love, and that the love I felt for my wife was a manifestation of God's eternal love for His children. I knew that the man assaulting me was capable of feeling this divine Love, which satisfies every human need, whether it's the need for money or affection.
