YEARS AGO, during the winter months in San Diego, I decided to become SCUBA-certified. Months after starting the course, I hired a dive master to evaluate my dive for certification. That day at the beach, high surf pounded the shore. The instructor initially expressed concern about going out, but we decided to go ahead. We headed into the surf in wet suits, with air tanks and depth gauges, plus weights on our belts.
