TEEN TALK

EXTREME MAKEOVER

Teen with a vision gets a chance to serve his church—with a little help from his friends and family.

From the June 2008 issue of The Christian Science Journal

FOR AS LONG AS I'VE BEEN A BOY SCOUT I've had the ultimate goal of becoming an Eagle Scout—the highest rank in Scouting. Two years ago I began a journey to find the "perfect" Eagle scout Leadership Service project, one that would challenge me while making a difference in my community.

That project eluded me until last February when my Christian Science Sunday School superintendent approached me with ideas for my project that centered on our church. They ranged from landscaping to digging up and replacing a section of collapsed sewer line. Another possibility, which was more of a fantasy at the time, was to update the church's Sunday School. It's a great area—about 2,200 square feet with two classrooms for the younger children, a reception area, and Clerk's office. But it had been about 30 years since anything much had been done except that the old orange-rust carpet had been cleaned and restretched. Heavy drapes covered all windows, which had been painted shut years earlier. The whole area had become a dumping ground for old furniture donated by the church members. Office records dated back to the early 1920s.

Even though I knew
the project would be
a huge undertaking,
I was thrilled to take it on.
