"GLIMPSES OF GRACE!" I love the title of this series in the Journal of photographs, paintings, and prose meditations. And a glimpse of grace is exactly what I experienced last spring when visiting the North Carolina property of Carl Sandburg, the American poet, writer, and historian who lived from 1878 to 1967. As I entered this US National Historic Site, I expected to see the big white house on a hill where the Sandburgs lived and even hoped to glimpse the Sandburgs' baby goats and their mothers in the barnyard beyond the house. And I did. But I didn't expect to first encounter this enchanting pond with its wavy, impressionistic reflections.
In these mirror images of nature I saw a combination of movement and stillness that I associate with grace—a spiritual quality I naturally associate with myself and everyone else. Because, as the spiritual expression of God, the divine Soul, each of us can effortlessly express an uninterrupted blend of movement and stillness in our daily lives, as well as naturally express many other qualities similar to grace, such as poise, balance, agility, gentleness, kindness, and composure.
So, feeling the peace of these surroundings, I set up my tripod to take this photograph. On this still North Carolina morning, I celebrated the unexpected gift of catching a brief—and ongoing—glimpse of our beautiful true nature.
