"PUSH YOURSELF!" Billy Blanks, the exercise guru, shouted from the TV screen. I complied—wishing to get the most out of my Taebo workout. After about the third move, I felt something shift in my back, making it painful for me to continue. I hobbled through the rest of the workout DVD until I finally sat down.
After about ten minutes, I tried to get up to turn off the TV but was unable to do so. This had never happened before, and I began to panic. My husband was preparing to leave for a work trip, which meant I would be left alone to care for our infant son. I needed help immediately. One thing I knew from being raised in Christian Science—Science referring to "the laws of God and to His government of the universe, inclusive of man" (Science and Health, p. 128)—was that God loved me and that I could rely on God for healing. God's love is a divine law that operates in my life, healing sickness and every inharmonious situation.
My husband assisted me to a telephone, where I called a dear practitioner friend who's always been a source of clarity and support. She was pleased to hear from me, as we hadn't spoken in a while. I asked her how she was doing. She began to tell me about the satisfying work she was involved in at church and the inspiration she had felt from its services. She said she felt such a wonderful Christly spirit that was so alive, particularly at the Wednesday testimony meetings. She felt that each testimony meeting was a new experience for her—all that she heard, the ideas people shared—were fresh, and they made church a unique experience each week. Her obvious joy and love for the church services spoke to my own love for church.
