Your Questions & Answers

Following the example set by the question-and-answer columns in the early Journals, when Mary Baker Eddy was Editor, this column will respond to general queries from Journal readers with responses from Journal readers.

"How can we stay strong in our faith in Christian Science...?"

From the January 2011 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Q: “Sometimes the ideas in Christian Science seem so abstract and unrelated—especially when faced with aggressive challenges such as a family member dealing with cancer. How can we stay strong in our faith in Christian Science and its effectiveness when the material picture seems so different from ‘spiritual reality’?”
—A summer intern at The Mother Church

A1: You’ve probably heard it said, “When the going gets tough, the tough get going.” I like the idea that scientific prayer is what helps us “get going” to find spiritual solutions in tough situations, especially when things seem most difficult.

For me, this prayer begins with an affirmation of God as good, and then with spiritual vision—a conviction that there is more to that situation than what appears on the surface. Mary Baker Eddy says in Science and Health, “We must look deep into realism instead of accepting only the outward sense of things” (p. 129).
