Painful lumps dissolved

From the January 2011 issue of The Christian Science Journal

About two years ago I noticed a painful lump getting larger on my neck. One night when my wife poked at it and asked, “What’s that?” I realized I needed to stop ignoring it. I needed to specifically challenge the notion that my body could spontaneously present something that was unusual or abnormal. I’ve learned in Christian Science that man is spiritual as the image and likeness of God, so I knew that what was happening in my body was not legitimate and required an aggressive mental defense.

Soon, other similar lumps formed on my neck and throat. I began to examine my thinking because I’ve found that by praying we may try to go about the business of treating something wrong with our bodies, when we’re actually correcting some wrong idea in thought. But I couldn’t think of anything challenging or unusual going on in my life.

After a few months, I contacted a Christian Science practitioner to help me pray. She said I needed to stay alert to the false belief that there can be more than one power. I prayed to know that God is all and that anything that would appear to oppose God’s all-power was nothing more than a lie trying to impose itself upon my thought.
