Around six or seven years ago, when I was working in a very busy bagel shop, there was a time when it seemed everyone was talking about getting the flu. Many of the people I worked with, as well as customers who came into the shop, were showing symptoms. One customer even asked me if I had it yet, and I said that I had not. He said, “Well, you will.” I immediately thought, “No, I will not!”
That same day, I realized I was talking on the same phone that one of the girls with the flu had just used. I wondered if I too might come down with the flu, but I quickly dismissed the thought and went about my business.
Saturday morning I woke up with all the symptoms. My first thought was one of fear, because I was expected to serve as Second Reader in church the next morning, and I didn’t know if I’d be able to.
