Catch good

From the December 2011 issue of The Christian Science Journal

When I first found Christian Science, I was surprised to learn that I didn’t have to catch a cold just because it was going around. One day I asked the librarian at a Christian Science Reading Room some questions about how to handle the “bug” people were complaining about. She said it wasn’t necessary to ever catch a cold again. With her comment I realized that the whole weight of public opinion holds no more power than a feather in the wind against the fact that Almighty God has created us not from a material basis, but from a spiritual basis.

Christian Science has taught me that the omnipotence of God is the only factor that determines our health. God made me healthy! When we recognize this fact, we can maintain health even in the midst of an apparent outbreak.

Now, years later, I rarely catch a cold, but if I find myself with those symptoms, I respond differently. I don’t ruminate about how long it is expected to last or what other symptoms it is purported to bring. Instead, I recognize illness as a spurious belief to be dismissed, because God would never make nor allow such a thing; rather, He heals it.
