“Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word” (Luke 1:38).
Few passages in Scripture touch the heart as deeply as Mary’s humble and obedient response to the angel Gabriel when she was told that she would conceive a child who would be called the Son of God. Mary, still a virgin and yet unmarried, doesn’t rebel at the news, but yields to the angel message that “with God nothing shall be impossible” (Luke 1:37).
Mary models for us genuine obedience. She doesn’t ask about the rewards for her obedience or complain about its sacrifices. She unselfishly bows to the spiritual demand. She listens to God’s instructions and willingly follows.
