Church Alive

CHURCH. The structure of Truth and Love; whatever rests upon and proceeds from divine Principle.
The Church is that institution, which affords proof of its utility and is found elevating the race, rousing the dormant understanding from material beliefs to the apprehension of spiritual ideas and the demonstration of divine Science, thereby casting out devils, or error, and healing the sick.
 – Mary Baker Eddy, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures

A 'well located' Reading Room

From the March 2011 issue of The Christian Science Journal

I often like to think about a requirement found in the Manual of The Mother Church: “It shall be the duty of the members of The Mother Church and of its branches to promote peace on earth and good will toward men; . . . they shall strive to promote the welfare of all mankind by demonstrating the rules of divine Love” (Mary Baker Eddy, p. 45).

I believe this requirement gives one the perfect opportunity to practice loving your neighbors by sharing Christian Science with them. I found this out for myself in a time of frustration when I was yearning to actively reach out to my wider community.

When I was appointed as Christian Science Reading Room librarian at the church where I was a member, I was so enthusiastic. We cleaned out the cupboards and shelves, created new window displays, and revamped the study area. All this activity felt very rewarding. I thought all this effort would help boost sales and encourage visitors.
