Lives Inspired by Mary Baker Eddy's Example

Healing and inspiration

From the March 2011 issue of The Christian Science Journal

I was born into a Hindu family, but by the time I became an engineering graduate searching for a job, I had no faith in the idol worshiping of God. However, I did have respect for all religions of the world because my mother would tell stories from various scriptures.

Since my early childhood, I would frequently suffer from bronchitis and was under medical treatment. Doctors told my parents that only an operation would permanently relieve this condition. It was in 1975, when I was gifted by a relative a copy of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures.

I was deeply impressed by Mary Baker Eddy’s system of healing with scientific prayer based upon “perfect God and perfect man” (Science and Health, p. 259), and wanted to learn how prayer heals. I started reading the Christian Science weekly Bible Lessons to become conversant with this system of prayer. Initially, it was difficult to understand as I had no knowledge of Bible characters, names, and places. But slowly I began to apply the truths I learned in my day-to-day life. I gained increasing confidence to depend upon scientific prayer during bronchitis attacks, until I was completely healed. This deepened my respect for Mary Baker Eddy and her discovery.
