Q: I’ve heard fellow parents say that once their children reach a certain age, they need to make Christian Science their “own.” On a basic level I understand that, but I’m wondering if you could shed some more light on this. —A reader in New York, New York, US
A: As a parent of many children, I can attest to the joy of watching their growth in proving and claiming Christian Science for themselves. Each has been different in the way and degree to which this has taken place. A few have not made it their “own.” While respectful and appreciative of its good, they have not pursued it. Who is to say when the value of divine Science in some form will become part of their experience? Others are active in Science and living it to the best of their understanding.
Christian Science became more fully “mine” when I was in the Peace Corps, on an island in the Philippines near Borneo. I was raised in Christian Science and had wonderful “instructors” (parents, teachers, friends, etc.). However, they were not available when I faced black water fever (acute malaria), far from them. My relationship with divine Life and Love strengthened me until health became evident and full healing occurred, with remarkably unselfish help from a practitioner in Manila.
