The first year I attended college, I became active in the Christian Science organization (CSO) on campus. One day, The Mother Church sent a Christian Science practitioner to meet and talk with us. One of the things he did was to speak with each of us individually. When my turn came, he asked me if I was a member of The Mother Church. I said no, and explained that I didn’t meet the requirements for membership (at that time) because I didn’t read the weekly Christian Science Bible Lesson every day.
His immediate response was, “The requirement is to study it regularly. It does not say daily.” He asked me if I read the Lesson at all. I replied that I did—usually every week. He asked me if I attended Sunday School. I replied that I rarely missed since I was also the organist.
I began to see what he was saying. By attending Sunday School, I was studying the Bible Lesson regularly. And that, together with the fact that I read some or all of it during the week, more than qualified me for membership—even if I did not read the whole Lesson every day. I felt very happy to realize that I did meet the qualifications for membership. I applied straightaway and was accepted the following November.
