A mothering Church

From the March 2012 issue of The Christian Science Journal

To me, The Mother Church is home. What it represents makes me feel as if I have found a “center for the affections” and “the dearest spot on earth,” as Mary Baker Eddy describes home (see Science and Health, p. 58). Think about it. Our deep spiritual affections and love for God have been given a safe place to be practiced and lived, in The Mother Church.

What’s more, Mrs. Eddy named her Church “Mother.” Why? Perhaps because she wanted a name that would resonate as the most intimate in human experience. What or who is more intimate and affectionate than a mother? It’s clear Mrs. Eddy wanted members of The Mother Church to feel deeply loved and cared for, to feel the purest sense of home they could know.

Being a member of The Mother Church has helped me be “mothered” in my life, and has shown me the true value of law.
