Q: In Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, Mary Baker Eddy wrote, “This divine Principle of all expresses Science and art throughout His creation, and the immortality of man and the universe” (p. 507). Would you comment on her use of the word art linked with Science?
A: What do you call an object with thousands of moving parts, bells, and levers, parked in the middle of a large space, designed to charm and be contemplated: science or art? In all its wonder, I observed this whatchamacallit passing through an airport lobby on my way to catch a cab. It was captivating and puzzling. I wasn’t sure if it was created by an engineer or an artist.
On a far grander scale, the question can be asked: In God’s fashioning of “the heaven and the earth,” is creation the result of scientific or artistic expression? Perhaps it’s not an either/or proposition. Both are included.
