After spending a post-Christmas vacation with our son and his family in Virginia, my wife and I began our 14-hour car trip back home to Indiana. We had had a perfectly wonderful and fun-filled time with our son’s family, which included a tour of the naval destroyer of which our son is captain and bringing in the New Year at their home.
Although I had begun to feel some back pain the morning we left, the situation turned quite serious about three hours into our trip. I began feeling nauseated and had a sharp pain in my side and back whenever I tried to change positions. My wife and I had to make frequent stops so I could get to a restroom.
I became scared and was hurting so badly I thought that I might have to go to a hospital for relief. My wife was very calm and comforting and let me know she would help me do whatever I needed to do. (She told me later that she had been praying and felt confident in God’s care for me.) It was during this time that I decided to call a Christian Science practitioner on my cellphone from the car and ask for her prayerful help. The Bible says, “Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” (John 8:32), and the practitioner was so steadfast in knowing and affirming the truth about me during the rest of the trip. She was always available the many times I phoned her from the car.
