Christian Science is the most blessed gift we have on this earth. It shows us the laws of God—laws of health and harmony—which are applicable to every human condition and knowable by all. These powerful laws of God are ever present and govern all that is good and true.
When I was a child, these laws healed me of symptoms of polio. This disease was in the headlines of the papers and greatly feared. A friend at school had come down with it and ended up wearing braces on both legs. One afternoon I exhibited all the symptoms. My mom, a devout Christian Scientist, called a Christian Science practitioner, who began praying diligently for me. She certainly listened and applied the laws of God that bring peace, health, and happiness. The symptoms had disappeared by the next morning.
A few times in later years, my legs would ache a bit in damp weather. One evening when I was a sophomore in college, I was alone in my dorm room when these symptoms tried to take hold. The phrase “one Father with His universal family, held in the gospel of Love” came to thought. This phrase comes from a paragraph in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy about understanding the divine nature of God. She writes: “This human sense of Deity yields to the divine sense, even as the material sense of personality yields to the incorporeal sense of God and man as the infinite Principle and infinite idea,—as one Father with His universal family, held in the gospel of Love” (pp. 576–577).
