A few years ago, I was faced with challenging physical symptoms, including difficulty in breathing, fatigue, and loss of appetite. It was during a time when I was very active in serving as musical and lighting director for an amateur theater company in our community. The play director was very concerned as to whether I would be able to continue with my work, but this was a wonderful opportunity to share with her other physical healings I’ve had through my reliance on Christian Science. I spoke to her about the reality of divine Spirit and God’s spiritual creation and about man’s dominion over beliefs of mortal mind, such as sickness.
Several cast members, as well as others in our small community, asked me and my wife what was wrong and whether I’d had the condition “checked out” by a medical doctor. We thanked them sincerely for their concern but let them know that the physical issue was being handled through prayer and that all was under control. Because I was able to continue my activities, albeit with some difficulty, cast members and neighbors no longer expressed their concerns to me.
After a few days with the symptoms continuing, I contacted a Christian Science practitioner for prayerful support. We spoke at least once a day over a period of about a month, reaffirming that my health is spiritually based, a quality and condition of Mind, not matter. What appears as ill health is simply an illusion, a lie of material belief, which cannot stand, given the fact that God is All-in-all, and that we reflect Him (see Mary Baker Eddy, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 468).
