On Thursday January 20, 1876, there was a knock at the front door of Number 8 Broad Street in Lynn, Massachusetts.
The resident, a woman by the name of Mary Baker Glover, had recently published her first book, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures. Its reception had been less than enthusiastic. In fact, the author would later note, the book had been “cannonaded” (Mary Baker Eddy, Pulpit and Press, p. 5) by the press and pulpit.
After such blasts of criticism, how heartening it must have been to find one of the leading intellectual lights of the day on her doorstep!
