Casting out ‘demons’

From the February 2016 issue of The Christian Science Journal

“Yes, I know, I know—casting out demons is what Jesus did. So what does that have to do with today?”

I was having a conversation with a friend about the Cross and Crown insignia found on the cover of Mary Baker Eddy’s writings. In a circle surrounding the Cross and Crown emblem are the words from the Bible: “Heal the sick. Raise the dead. Cleanse the lepers. Cast out demons.” The discussion seemed important, since these direct biblical commands were chosen to grace the covers of Mrs. Eddy’s writings.

Though the statement includes healing the sick, raising the dead, and cleansing the leper, our focus that day was on casting out demons. Our conversation piqued my interest, and started me thinking more about it.
