At the time when I found Christian Science, I was suffering from a skin disease for which I had tried several medicines, none of which had been successful. This, however, was not the reason why I decided to buy the book Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy the very first time I saw it in a display window of a Christian Science Reading Room. In fact, I had never heard or read anything at all about Christian Science before. Nevertheless, only a few months after obtaining and reading Science and Health, I was healed of the skin disease.
Not long after that, while attending a lecture on Christian Science, I sat beside a gentleman who told me that he was a Christian Science practitioner, and that his name could be found in the French edition of The Herald of Christian Science. I remembered this because, while I had been healed of the skin disease, I was still having other problems with my spinal vertebrae. Once in a while I would fall on the ground and become immobilized. I thought maybe this gentleman could help me.
At the time I was working as a waiter in a club, and one day, as I was getting ready to serve lunch for about twenty guests, I was struck severely and without warning. Suddenly I found myself lying on the dining room floor of this club and asking myself, “How can I get out of the dining room?” I was almost totally immobilized, but I remembered the conversation I had had with the practitioner some time earlier, and I asked one of my colleagues to go up to my room and bring me down a French Herald.
