When I turned three, my grandmother enrolled me in the Sunday School of the branch Church of Christ, Scientist, where she was a member. She was a relatively new student of Christian Science herself. She had become ill, and the family doctor had sent her to a specialist, who ran many tests and said her cancer was so advanced that the doctors could not help her. Then he added, “I suggest you try Christian Science.”
She didn’t know what that was, but her inquiries led her to a Christian Science practitioner, who talked to her about Christian Science and started praying for her. My grandmother was completely healed and became a dedicated student of this wonderful Science.
My mother (her daughter) was so grateful and impressed by her mother’s healing that she embraced Christian Science too. I loved Sunday School, and our family experienced memorable healings through the years. As I studied the writings of Mary Baker Eddy, I paid careful attention to the words she used. If a sentence stood out to me, I reread it, emphasizing each word in turn, asking myself what that word added to the meaning of the sentence. Fresh insights and healings followed.
