At some time or another, most of us have probably seen what happens when a boat skims the sea: A wave is created in its wake, resulting in a series of diminishing ripples on the surface of the water. Or when we throw a pebble into a pond, we see many rings spreading out as a result of that single action.
In divine Science we learn that understanding something of omnipotent divine Truth has a similar result. To drop some clear perception of Truth’s allness into the seeming “ocean” of mortal belief dispels false thinking with majesty and might, to healing effect. It quiets fears and stills the storms of upheaval in daily life, and the effect of realizing Truth’s ever-presence—like ripples of water—is far-reaching. Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, writes in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, “The ‘still, small voice’ of scientific thought reaches over continent and ocean to the globe’s remotest bound” (p. 559).
Christ Jesus exemplified that powerful, scientific thought. Science and Health speaks of him as the most scientific of all men. He taught his followers the healing power of divine Truth and Love, and he backed up his teachings with practical proofs. As a result, news of Jesus’ healing ministry spread far and wide, and multitudes came to him to be healed.
