Available, approachable, understandable

From the January 2019 issue of The Christian Science Journal

When I first opened my heart to taking what I was learning in Christian Science about the allness of God and expanding it beyond the walls of my own household, there was a keen desire to be a blessing to others. With this in mind, I strived to ground my daily endeavors and communications in three ideals: being available, approachable, and understandable.

Very quickly I realized these three goals weren’t just about human activity; they were the outcome of my forever oneness with God, infinite Mind and Love, who is always available and approachable and understandable. My desire was to allow God’s love for His creation to be seen in my life in a way that all could understand. So I began to actively cherish these three qualities and ideals as a way to express my true nature as the reflection of God, and be a blessing in every circumstance.

This brought forward very practical realizations in my thought. Available: I realized it didn’t do any good to have incredible insights of God’s allness but then hole myself away from everyday life. Approachable: Subsequently, it didn’t do any good to be out rubbing elbows with others but mentally closed off, afraid that someone would actually talk to me. Understandable: I needed to genuinely understand and sufficiently think through the inspiring ideas that were coming to me so that I could speak of them to others in words that were understandable. I knew that because God is always available, approachable, and understandable, and each of us is made in His image, it was actually natural for me to express these qualities.
