‘River thinking’ and healing waters

From the July 2019 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Sometimes it might feel as though we are trying to swim upstream, against the current. And even if we try to change our course to move in the right direction, it can still seem difficult to navigate the rough, deep waters.

In those seeming “drowning” moments of confusion and turmoil, I have always found comfort, guidance, and complete answers by turning to God in prayer. Christian Science has taught me that not only does God have all the answers, but He is the answer. And we are never helpless.

In the Bible, in the book of Exodus, we read that when Moses was a baby, his mother sent him down the river in a basket in order to protect him from Pharaoh. In Second Kings, Elisha was with a group of men clearing a forest when the head of a borrowed ax fell into the river Jordan, and then the ax head floated. In Revelation, John describes his beautiful vision of a river with the tree of life on either side, yielding twelve crops of fruit on a monthly basis. What beautiful, inspiring, and important stories that show us God’s tender love, constant protection, and infinite supply!
